Characteristics of a Christian Business
There are hundreds of proverbs, pieces of wisdom, and guidance in the Bible for business owners and professionals. The way we treat others, our customers, employees, and all stakeholders should reflect the goodness of God in a Christian’s life and business.
However, out of the many Christian characteristics, there are four which are core of what it means to be a Christian business. These are integrity, excellence, serving others and giving.
Essentially, integrity is doing what is right. We gain our understanding of right and wrong from the Bible. Do you study the Bible? Do you glean from it God’s commands and expectations? Do you make decisions based on biblical principles? Do you filter your decisions first through the question of what will glorify God? “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
A commitment to excellence in every aspect of your business, including the way you treat people during your interactions and transactions with others (customers, employees, suppliers, other stakeholders). It will especially show in your service and in your products. Titus 3:8 says, “The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.” When you are devoted to good service and good products, your business reflects your Christian faith well.
Serving others through your business, products and services by making their lives better and in turn making the world a better place, is at the center of this characteristic. Finding the true purpose and meaning of why you are in business and finding a way to deliver on that purpose will not only change lives but bring success to your business. 1 Peter 4:10 “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace…”
We are called to be a blessing and blessed to be a blessing. Money is and should always be a tool. A means to an end. A means to accomplish something good in God’s Kingdom. However, giving includes giving of your time, talent and treasure. Genesis 12:2 “And l will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.”
Remember, that if you want to build your business based on biblical principles, you must know the Bible and its Author then commit to following what He instructs there. “Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14).
